When designed Outlander was based on the Mitsubishi ASX as an Active Sports Crossover representing Mitsubishi as they entered the SUV trend while retaining the off-road abilities of a truck with car like levels of emissions, economy and size. The regular Outlander is larger than the Outlander Sport offering more seating and a larger standard engine than the new Mitsubishi Outlander Sport. Competing in its class is the CR-V, Forester, Tiguan Rogue and RAV4, all of which are also considered compact to midsize crossover SUVs.
